Lot Essay

Aivasovskii made great use of the dramatic effects of the full moon as can be seen in this painting. Here he has produced an air of calm with subdued moonlight on the ship and flat sea. As with his sunrises and sunsets he restricted his palette to variations of a single dominant colour. A similar work in its colouring and light is 'Shipping by a moonlit coast' an oil on card now in a private collection, and Shipping on a moonlit night' of 1865, an oil on panel in a private Swiss collection. see back cover illustration
