Pictures with the texts of Russian folksongs were often produced at lithograph studios in Moscow in the second half of the 19th century. They were generally printed on thin paper and painted by hand. The artist often failed to keep within the boundaries of the contours; this method of colouring was known as painting 'the tops and tails'.
