SAINT NICHOLAS
RUSSIAN, 19TH CENTURY
The bust-length portrait of the saint dominates the panel. He is wearing the Episcopal omophorion and a halo decorated with punch work. He is blessing and carrying the Gospels, the cover of which imitates the mounting of the actual Russian Gospel books, with the symbols of the Passion in the centre. Christ and his Mother float in the clouds and flank Saint Nicholas. Four saints figure in the border, which is otherwise decorated with punched foliate motifs. This icon is very opulent as it is painted on gold, which also explains why in some areas, as for example on the garments of the Saint, the painting is semi-translucent. - 15 3/8 x 17 5/8in. (39.25 x 44.75cm.)
