A SILVER-GILT MOUNTED GOSPEL BOOK
RUSSIA, 1896
Bound in crimson velvet and silver gilt mounts. On the obverse, Christ holding his cross rises from the tomb while being gazed at by two kneeling angels. The Evangelists, with their apocalyptic personifications, are depicted in the corners holding scrolls (Luke at the lower right holds a book). On the reverse the symbols of the Passion are placed on the summit of Golgotha, just above the skull of Adam, in front of the walled city of Jerusalem. The rest of the mounts are decorated with opulent foliate motifs. In the book, each Gospel is preceded by a full-page lithographic representation of its Evangelist and the title pages bear medallions with images from the life of Christ. The edges of the pages are coloured in gold and are stamped with geometric designs and crosses. Silversmith's marks 1896-1908, possibly by Ivan Alexeyev. The book was printed in 1896 at the Moscow Synodal Press
