DEISIS AND FOUR SAINTS
GREEK, DATED 1859
The upper register shows the Deisis, with Christ dressed as a High Priest and seated on a wooden, carved and gilded throne. He wears a mitre together with his tripartite halo, blesses with his right hand and holds the open Gospel which quotes John 10,11: 'I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep'. Christ is flanked by his Mother and John the Baptist, both gesturing in supplication and leaning towards Him. The three figures have their names inscribed in Greek abbreviations. The lower register is divided into three sections. The left and right show the military saints George and Demetrios in equestrian form while executing their most famous deeds: Saint George killing the dragon and Saint Demetrios, allegorically, slaying the Gladiator. The middle compartment shows Saint Charalambos carrying a closed Gospel Book and at the right is Venerable Stylianos, patron of the children, and thus bearing a baby in swaddling clothes, 8¼ x 10 1/8in. (21 x 25.75cm.)
