SAINT NICHOLAS THE WONDER-WORKER
RUSSIAN, CIRCA 1800
Saint Nicholas holds an open Gospel book with his left hand and, blesses with his right hand. He wears the bishop's stole, his robe is ornate with dark brown foliate designs and his halo is stamped with rosettes. He is flanked by two medallions which depict the half-figures of Christ with the Gospel at the left and, the Mother of God carrying the Episcopal stole at the right. The face of the saint is carefully painted and the details of his features are accentuated with delicate, linear, white brushstrokes. The border is painted orange. - 14½ x 12¼in. (37 x 30.5cm.)
