ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM
GREEK, CIRCA 1800
Christ, in the centre of the composition, is mounted on the ass and identified by his Greek initials IC XC. He is followed by his disciples, all bearing, like him, golden haloes. At the right forefront, a young man lays a cloth for Christ to pass, in accord with the Gospels where it is mentioned that in entering Jerusalem Christ was recognised as the Messiah (Mk 11:1-11 Mt 21:1-11; Lk 19:28-40; Jn 12:12-19). Further behind, the people of Jerusalem with palm-branches in their hands are welcoming Christ, who gazes and blesses them with his raised right hand. The buildings at the background probably signify the city of Jerusalem. The icon is inscribed in capital Greek: the Palm-bearing. The realistic representation of the background distances the icon from the Byzantine tradition, and indicates a dating to c.1800. - 8½ x 7in. (21½ x 17¾cm.)
