SAINT TIKHON OF KALUGA THE MIRACLE-WORKER
RUSSIAN, CIRCA 1850
Saint Tikhon stands in the hollow of the oak, in which he spent many years after he had become a monk. His golden, radiant halo testifies his subsequent sainthood. His garments are of earthly-colour tones and his stole is decorated repeatedly with the instruments of Jesus's Passion. On a podium in front of him there is a closed Gospel, whereas Saint Tikhon addresses the icon of Christ Pantokrator which is on a ledge along with a candle. His petition which is inscribed on the scroll he holds refers to the repentance of the people of Kaluga. The town at the background must be Medin where Saint Tikhon founded a monastery. The Church in front should be that of the Saint's Monastery, which was dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. The portrayal of Medin and the reference to the people of Kaluga, might indicate that the icon was produced in this locality. The background is gold and the frame imitates enamelwork. - 5 1/8 X 7in. (13 x 17.5cm.)
