SAINT GEORGE
GREEK, DATED 1900
Saint George with parted hair and a halo, dressed in armour with a red, flowing cape, is mounted on a white, rearing horse. He holds a spear with cruciform finial which he has just plunged into the mouth of the snake-bodied dragon. To the right, the rescued princess appears in the pose of orant and in the distant background, the tower, with her parents atop, is visible. An angel with a palm branch, symbolising victory, descends from heaven to crown the Saint with a wreath. The icon is painted with pastel colours in a realistic manner. - 14½ x 18in. (36.75 x 45.75cm.)
