8° (185 x 126mm). 42 illustrations after John Tenniel. Original red cloth, gilt-stamped, spine gilt-lettered, gilt edges (spine very lightly and evenly sunned); modern cloth slipcase. Provenance: Edith Mary Miller (1870-1929; inscription from the author).

Eighth edition. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY DODGSON: 'Edith Miller from the Author. Oct. 3, 1893' (for the copy of Through the Looking-Glass inscribed to Edith on the same day, see lot 24). Edith Miller was one of Dodgson's child-friends, whom he first met in 1881 and with whom he stayed in contact until his death. This edition contains an entirely reset 'Mouse's Tale', and a version of the illustration on page 91 which shows Alice as 'faceless'. A VERY GOOD COPY. Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch 46f.
