POSING AND SOLVING PROBLEMS. The letter refers to an enclosed example (no longer present) of a problem of symbolic logic, and its various possibilities: 'When a letter occurs in 2 or more premisses, & the same, accented, in 2 or more, you cannot treat it as a "bar", for you would have 2 premisses, each barring the other ...'. Dodgson goes on to point out the impossibility of dealing with the enclosed example using the 'bar' principle, and proposes two other approaches, one involving 'premisses to spare', the second involving two columns. The letter concludes with advice to master the enclosed example: 'you will then be in the proper state of knowledge to have some chance with the rather hard example you sent me', and the excuse 'I have very little time for letters'.
