DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge ('Lewis Carroll'). Autograph letter signed ('Your loving C.L.D.') to 'May' [Marion Miller], 7 Lushington Road [Eastbourne], 14 September 1893, one page, 8vo, on a bifolium (very slight discolourations).
A STORYTELLING PROPOSAL: Dodgson has just thought, 'in reference to those little maids you were walking with when last we met', to propose telling them 'Bruno's Picnic': 'I've told it to gatherings of little maids, varying in age from 5 to 14 (say), & in number from 20 to 100 -- It takes about 20 minutes to tell. How many do you think you could muster?'.
'Bruno's Picnic' -- published three months after this letter was written as part of Sylvie and Bruno Concluded -- was a favourite story of Dodgson's for public recitation, for which its light fantasy and insistent pattern of interruptions made it particularly suited.
