8° (170 x 119 mm). Original blue cloth gilt, edges gilt (spine lightly sunned, light rubbing); morocco case and chemise. Provenance: Sidney James Owen (1827-1912) and Mary Ellen Owen (1835-1928, inscription from the author) -- Montague Cunliffe Owen (bookplate) -- Eldridge R. Johnson (his sale, Parke-Bernet Galleries, 3 April 1946, lot 63).
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. AN EARLY PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY DODGSON: 'S. Owen, Esq, & Mrs. Owen, with the Author's kind regards. Jan. 1869.' S.J. Owen was tutor and reader in law and modern history at Christ Church, and his wife Mary Ellen (née Sewell) was a trained barrister.
Dodgson is known to have photographed their daughter Lucy in 1868. Owen features regularly in Dodgson's diaries and the pair evidently often dined together at Christ Church. Dodgson was inspired to write The New Belfry by one of Owen's dinner-time stories. An 'entertaining medley ... Dodgson's intention was to have secured illustrations by George Du Maurier, but the plan fell through' (WMGC). Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch 68.
