DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge ('Lewis Carroll'). Notes by an Oxford Chiel. Oxford: E. Pickard Hall and J.H. Stacy for James Parker, '1865-1874' [1874].
12° (162 x 108mm). Original green cloth gilt, upper cover lettered in gilt, gilt edges (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: James Reginald Lothian Carstairs (booklabel).
FIRST EDITION, PERHAPS IN A TRIAL BINDING, with white endpapers and the covers showing a gilt rule border without corner ornaments. The present copy is bound without the general title or table of contents, and the half-titles to the separate pieces have been neatly removed, suggesting that it was bound in this variant binding before these were ready (WMGC notes that the general title and contents leaves are not present in all copies, including the Parrish copy, which is 'probably an early proof'). Notes by an Oxford Chiel collects The New Method for Evaluation as applied to \Kp\k, The Dynamics of a Parti-cle, Facts, Figures and Fancies, The New Belfry, The Vision of the Three T's, and The Blank Cheque. Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch 98.
