DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge ('Lewis Carroll'). The Hunting of the Snark. London: R. Clay, Sons, and Taylor for Macmillan and Co., 1876.

4° (184 x 124mm). 9 illustrations after Henry Holiday. Original dark green cloth, gilt-stamped, spine gilt lettered, gilt edges, Burn & Co. binder's ticket at rear inside cover (gilt lightly rubbed, light wear at corners and spine ends, lower hinge just starting). Provenance: sale, Sotheby's, 29 November 1989, lot 147.

FIRST EDITION, ONE OF VERY FEW COPIES BOUND IN DARK GREEN CLOTH FOR PRESENTATION. In a letter to Macmillan on 21 March 1876 Dodgson ordered '100 [copies] in red and gold, 20 in dark blue and gold, 20 in white vellum and gold' (WMGC, p.89). He also mentions that dark green, light green and light blue are available, though it is very unlikely that more than a very few copies, probably between 10 and 20, will have been bound in these colours. ABPC only records this copy being offered at auction in the last 30 years. Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch 115.
