8° (181 x 122mm). (Small repair on verso of front free endpaper.) Original red cloth, spine gilt-lettered (spine lightly sunned, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Thomas Jones Prout (1823-1909, gift inscription from the author).

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR: 'Rev. T.J. Prout with the author's sincere regards, March 27/79'. 'One of the outstanding examples of serious argument cast in an amusing style ... this is the most elaborate mathematical work produced by Dodgson' (WMGC 128). Thomas Jones Prout was a colleague of Dodgson's at Christ Church, and principal agitator among Christ Church dons pressing for reform of the collegiate structure, particularly the allocation of resources to Dean and Chapter -- a cause with which Dodgson was allied. Euclid and his Modern Rivals is a comic work in which a mathematics lecturer debates the Elements with the modern rivals, but each is routed by strength of logical argument. The modernizers include A.-M. Legendre and J.M. Wilson. Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch 128.
