DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge ('Lewis Carroll'). Curiosa Mathematica. Part I, A New Theory of Parallels. London: Horace Hart for Macmillan, 1888.

8° (185 x 120mm). Diagrammatic frontispiece and illustrations. (Light marginal spotting.) Publisher's original tan pictorial cloth, publisher's device blocked on lower cover (spotting on front cover, spine end chipped, short split to lower hinge). Provenance: 'D' (pencilled on front pastedown).

FIRST EDITION, ONE OF ONLY 250 COPIES, of Dodgson's attempt to improve Euclid's 12th Axiom. The large collection of mathematical papers left by Dodgson give an indication of the vast amount of time he spent on this project. 'In this long and exact inquiry he has imbedded an investigation into circles with inscribed and circumscribed hexagons, as one of his methods of confuting Circle-Squarers. The amusing preface shows that in his task of meeting and defeating that particular band of cranks the mantle of Augustus De Morgan (who died in 1871) descended on Dodgson's shoulders' (WMGC). Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch 210.
