JOYCE, James (1882-1941). Chamber Music. London: Elkin Mathews, 1907. 8° in fours (159 x 109mm). Publisher's green cloth gilt, third variant binding with thin wove transparent endpapers and poems in signature C poorly centred on page (spine faded). Provenance: Adam Raymond Hausmann (bookplate and owner's initials on front endpaper).
THE FIRST EDITION OF JOYCE'S FIRST COMMERCIALLY-PUBLISHED BOOK, preceded in his bibliography only by the privately printed pamphlets Et Tu, Healy! [1891 or 1892] and The Holy Office [1904 or 1905]. Chamber Music, a collection of poems, was published by Elkin Mathews on the recommendation of the poet Arthur Symons (1865-1945), who had also approached Grant Richards and Constable, and who gave the volume a favourable review in the Nation (22 June 1907). Individual poems had previously appeared in the London Saturday Review, Speaker and the Dublin journal, Dana. Slocum states that the priority of the second and third variants is undetermined.
