Original red cloth, spine lettered in brown, dust-jacket (some very light staining to foot of upper cover, wrapper neatly torn with small piece torn away from lower wrapper, a few chips). Provenance: John Gawsworth, Realm of Redonda (bookplate). FASCINATING ASSOCIATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S BEST-KNOWN WORK. Pasted onto the front free endpaper is a speculative bibliography in Julian Maclaren-Ross's hand listing 6 titles which were never published. The list is annotated by Gawsworth ("Numbers 1 - 6 never appeared, alas, owing to the author's premature death ..."), ending with the salutation: "Ave atque Vale, Ragusa".
"John Gawsworth was the pseudonym of Terence Ian Fytton Armstrong (1912-70), poet, writer and bibliographer, who was well-known in Bohemian circles in the 1940s. He inherited the island of Redonda from the writer M. P. Shiel, and duly appointed himself King Juan I, third King of Redonda. Denise Hooker wrote in Nina Hamnett, 'He would don robes and hold ceremonies where he bestowed the various secular and ecclesiastical titles of what he was pleased to call the intellectual aristocracy of his realm on friends.' Among the recipients were Victor Gollancz, Henry Miller, Dylan Thomas, John Waller, and John Heath-Stubbs. Gawsworth had created Julian Maclaren-Ross Duke of Ragusa in 1949, and promoted him to Grand Duke, on Tuesday July 7, 1958, Julian's forty-sixth birthday. He also ennobled Julian's son Alexander Vincent that day, with the title of Duke of Courtfield." (PAB)
