"Horizon was founded by Cyril Connolly, Peter Watson (who financed it), and Stephen Spender (who initially lent his flat to house it). Connolly, who edited it throughout its ten year life, intended it as a successor to The Criterion, The London Mercury, and New Verse, which had all ceased publication in 1939. The contributors included Evelyn Waugh - one whole issue [see Vol. XVII, No. 98, 1948] was devoted to the first appearance of his story The Loved One - Graham Greene, and most of the leading writers in English of the 1940s."
