PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed, "E. F. with the compliments of the author. Oscar Wilde." "E. F." is possibly Ernest Flower (1865-1926), philanthropist and Conservative M.P. for Bradford West between 1895 and 1906, and a friend of Adela Schuster, who made 'serious representations' to the Home Secretary about Wilde's condition during his imprisonment. In a letter written in February 1898 to Robert Ross, Wilde writes "There was an MP who was nice about me, through Miss Schuster; I forget his name. Would you have a copy [of The Ballad of Reading Gaol] sent to him also, with a slip?"
