The History of Goody Two-Shoes; otherwise called Mrs. Margery Two-Shoes. With the Means by which she acquired her Learning and Wisdom, and in Consequence thereof her Estate. London: Printed for T. Carnan, Successor to Mr. Newbery, 1783. 32° (96 x 64mm). Woodcut frontispiece and 35 illustrations, 2-page of publisher's advertisements at the end (some very light staining). Contemporary boards with woodcut illustration of a house and a tree printed in sanguine, floral border (rubbed, stain to upper cover). Modern red morocco box by Riviere & Son. Provenance: Mary and Susanna Ireland (signatures on front and rear endpapers dated 1787 and 1788). RARE. cf. Gumuchian 2756 (with frontispiece in facsimile and 4-pages of publisher's advertisements); cf. Osborne II, p.890 (closest match being an imperfect copy of 1780 edition): "First published in 1765". Authorship of Goody Two Shoes is variously ascribed to Giles and Griffith Jones and Oliver Goldsmith.
