A RARE PAIR OF IMPERIAL CARVED POLYCHROME BOWLS
QIANLONG INCISED AND GILT SIX-CHARACTER MARKS AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)

The exterior surface of each shallow bowl is of cinnabar lacquer, finely carved in high relief with six striding five-clawed horned dragons amidst scrolling clouds against a diaper-ground of black lacquer, above the circular foot decorated with a key-fret band, the interior lined to the mouth rim with gilt-metal

A similar pair of shallow bowls, unmarked, was sold in these Rooms, 29 April 2000, lot 598. Smaller Qianlong-marked bowls with this exact carving of whiskered dragons are illustrated in Carved Lacquer in the Collection of the Palace Museum, Wenwu Chubanshe, 1985, no. 339; and another in Gugong Qici Tezhan Mulu, 'National Palace Museum Special Exhibition of Lacquerwares', Taipei, 1981, no. 47 (both examples without the metal lining).
