Miniature cabinets of this type were made for display on a kang which served as a seat in the day and a bed at night. The present lot is exceptional in the way that the design of dragons has been lavishly produced on all the surfaces of the cabinet, including the sides and the top. In other similar cabinets, these secondary surfaces are more usually decorated with simple repetitive diaper patterns. The closest example to the present lot in its composition and arrangement of design is the cabinet from the Estate of Dr. Ip Yee, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 19 November 1984, lot 121.

Cf. a pair of cabinets sold in these Rooms, 7 July 2003 (catalogue dated 28 April 2003), lot 598. This type of cabinet is also depicted with antiques on the doors, such as the example in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Zhongguo Qiqi Quanji, vol. 6, Qing, Fujian meishu chubane, 1995, no. 230.
