Lot Essay

This type of kunstkammer interior was perhaps Francken's most important contribution to seventeenth-century art, and influenced such contemporaries as Cornelis de Baellieur, Hans Jordaens III, Jan van Kessel, Gonzales Coques and David Teniers II. The earliest known example of the genre is that by Francken dated 1612 and sold at Christie's, London, 17 December 1999, lot 7. Amongst the many paintings and objects in the room is a Japanese ceremonial Kiris sword hanging from the wall.
