Lot Essay

With its bold contrasting veneers and graceful proportions, this elegant sofa epitomizes the manifestations of the Federal aesthetic frequently seen in the areas around Salem, Massachusetts and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The rectangular veneer panels heading the outer front legs and the bulbous-turned and reeded arm supports are found on a sofa that descended in the family and house of James Rundlet (1772-1852) of Portsmouth, now in the collection of Historic New England and illustrated in Brock Jobe, Portsmouth Furniture: Masterworks from the New Hampshire Seacoast (Hanover, NH, 1993), pp. 375-377, cat. no. 105. Another sofa illustrated in Jobe (pp. 378-381, cat. no. 106) features a similarly dynamic veneered crest and identical bulbous-turned and reeded tapering legs.
