Lambert Hitchcock moved to Connecticut in 1818 and began making these inexpensive, stylish chairs that were embellished with gilding, stencilling and paint decoration. In varying shapes and designs, and with seats of rush, cane and planed wood, they enjoyed tremendous popularity during the second quarter of the nineteenth century.
