Lot Essay

With its relief-carved tablet crests, tall scrolling arms and short scrolling legs, this sofa exemplifies the Grecian style popular in New York in the second decade of the nineteenth century. It exhibits a pleasing synthesis of proportion and ornament, and the classical motifs of cornucopia and wheat sheaves demonstrate the variety of carving and decorative options available to the fashionable consumer.
