Lot Essay

In her notes, Mrs. Blair recorded the known history of this pair of chairs: "Originally owned by Gen. Muhlenberg and passed at dispersal of his effects to a Lancaster Co. Pa. Family; then to Mrs. Scott Townsend, near Wilmington, Del. from whom they were purchased" (Blair Collection Papers). While these chairs may have been owned General Muhlenberg (the "Fighting Pastor" of the American Revolution), they may have descended to Levi Scott Townsend (1867-1918), who resided in New Castle County, Delaware. His great-great grandparents, Thomas and Lydia Scott, were born in Ireland and immigrated to Delaware in the late eighteenth century.
