Lot Essay

The kidney-shaped frame was favored in Philadelphia during the Federal era. This card table features several characteristics associated with Philadelphia craftsmanship, including three fixed legs and one fly leg and flush-back construction. A related card table with a similar combination of curved hollow center, geometric ornament along the front panel, and narrowly tapered legs is illustrated in J. Michael Flanigan, American Furniture from the Kaufman Collection (New York, 1986), fig. 63.
