The urn tops and tall columnar shafts of these andirons are characteristics of andirons made in Philadelphia in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. For a related pair, see Peter, Nancy and Herbert Schiffer, The Brass Book (Exton, Pennsylvania, 1978), p. 69, figs. A and C. Additionally, the plinths are engraved with baskets of flowers on the fronts and oval paterae on the sides, similar to those illustrated in Schiffer, p. 50, fig. B.
