While the present composition is one of several versions that all derive from a lost painting by Jan Gossaert, Marlier (op. cit.) believes that this and another Virgin and Child in the Musée Archéologique Curtius, Liège clearly show the hand of Pieter Coecke van Aelst himself, particularly in the facial types of the Virgins. However, Coecke van Aelst headed an extremely active workshop, '...a kind of painting factory' (Friedländer, loc. cit. p. 380), in which many versions of his works were produced and it would seem that the present lot also includes a degree of studio participation.
