Lot Essay
We are grateful to Ludwig Meyer for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. He notes (private correspondence, 27 September 2005) that the present small-scale, keel-arched format is a characteristic particularly associated with works of the Constance School; it would originally have been the central panel of a triptych. He also notes the stylistic affinities with such works by Haider as the triptych of The Crucifixion in the Staatlichen Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe (inv. no. 48a-c) or the surviving central panel of the altarpiece also of The Crucifixion in the Schweizerischen Landesmuseum, Zurich (inv. no. 31798).
