Lot Essay

Jan Frans van Dael was a devoted pupil of Gerard van Spaendonck. Apart from his intricate flower and fruit pieces, Van Dael also produced a considerable number of miniatures. Several of the simple paintings with flowers in a glass beaker were made around 1800; for example, A flower piece with a cabbage rose, marigold, snowball and scarlet runner bean, dated 'An 8', with Gallery Jean-François Heim, Paris, in 1995. We are grateful to Dr. Sam Segal for his assistance with cataloguing this lot.
