Bordeaux 1982 - A Coming of Age
Truly great wines evolve over a long period of time, some 50 years or more, but many Bordeaux vintages reach a real pinnacle of enjoyment after 20 years or so of slow bottle maturation with the assistance of perfect temperature and humidity. It is fortunate then that the decade of the 1980s in Bordeaux provided so many vintages of exceptional quality that are now reaching their first peak of maturity. The greatest of this decade and possible the most consistent of the second half of the last century was 1982. After 21+ years in bottle the wines of this legendary vintage are now flourishing. Some wines at the very top will continue to develop and improve in bottle, but many are now showing beautifully. As wines from excellent vintages before 1982 become extremely scarce, the 1982s have become benchmark wines for collectors around the world. The 1982 vintage sits proudly with 1945 and 1961 as the greatest Bordeaux vintages of the 20th Century. RB
