An unusual George II burr yew table timepiece with quarter repeat
Randle Maddock, Leek. Circa 1740
The case with gilt-metal handle to the inverted bell top, breakarch glazed sides, feather inlaid and cross-banded front door and sides, the moulded base on pad feet, the dial signed Randle Maddock Leek Fecit on the silvered chapter ring with half hour and half quarter hour markers, the matted centre with false left winding square, the arch with silvered date ring with matted centre and mock pendulum aperture, pendulum regulation square beneath engraved Slower/Faster, the substantial movement with thick brass plates and six ring-turned pillars, wire fusee and large spring barrel, tic-tac escapement with unusual pendulum with regulation to the rod, pull quarter repeat on three bells, the backplate well engraved with acanthus foliage
