An impressive George II oak four train musical hooded wall clock
Joseph Phillips, Easttown, Bristol. Movement and dial circa 1750, case of later date
The 14¼in. square brass dial signed Joseph Phillips in Easttown by Bristol on the silvered chapter ring with half hour and half quarter hour markers, matted centre with decorated calendar aperture, later blued steel hands, the massive four train movement with square-section brass pillars to each angle, the going, quarter and hour trains in tandem on the right side; anchor escapement with long pendulum, the quarters chiming on a nest of six bells via six hammers, countwheel strike on a further large bell for the hours via a countwheel on the backplate with trip linkeage to the musical train playing three times a day on eight bells via eight hammers, the case with turned gilt-wood finials to the architectural pediment set with a carved gilt-wood crest for the City of Bristol, the door with reeded columns, the lower rail set with a brass plaque engraved To be placed in the King's Ante Room, the sides set with hinged doors having intricately carved sound frets, the wall bracket with wavy apron and gilt-wood drop finials
