A late George III mahogany year-going and striking longcase clock
Unsigned. Circa 1790
The case with raised hollow cornered panel to the double-footed plinth, the trunk with gilt-wood capped and reeded quarter columns flanking the breakarch trunk door - the inside pasted with a fading ink equation table and paper scraps noting the occasions of winding the clock with the earliest dated 1849, the hood with detached brass-capped reeded columns flanking the door applied with foliate and gilt carving to the spandrels, swan-neck pediment with cast brass rosette terminals flanking a mahogany urn finial, the 18in. diameter circular silvered engraved dial with Roman and Arabic chapters, dot minute markers, steel hour and minute hands, sweep seconds, the outer concentric edge engraved with wavy foliage, the substantial movement with brass A-shape plates cut-away at the base, the going train with Graham-type deadbeat escapement, the hours struck on a bell above the plates via rack system on the front plate; with two further framed scraps of paper noting further windings - the earliest dated June 24 1909 by Canon Thorndike
