Benjamin Vulliamy, 1775-1820 made several clocks with silent verge escapements. Vulliamy no doubt used the silent verge as an added marketing tool by emphasizing its versatility as a clock that could be used downstairs during the day and bedside by night. The two most common methods of 'silencing' verge pallets were either to employ gut lines or flexible weak springs. The latter had the advantage of being harder wearing and adjustable by depthing screw but arguably the gut line was just as effective because by the time the gut needed to be replaced the clock was due a service anyway.
