9 volumes, 8o (168 x 100 mm). Half-titles in volumes IV-VI and IX, marbled leaf inserted between L4 and L5 in vol. III. Engraved frontispieces in vols. I and III. (A few minor stains, a few ink stains in vol. IV affecting a few letters, small hole on N4 in vol. IV, not affecting text.) Original boards or wrappers (a few vols. rebacked, front wrapper of vol. I detached); housed in two quarter morocco slipcases. Provenance: Jonas Clarkson (contemporary signature on front free endpaper and notation on front blank in vol. II); armorial bookplate with motto "Consequitur quodcunque petit" in vol. IV; The Circulating Library of John Pickering, Bookseller (bookplate in vol. V).

FIRST EDITIONS, FIRST STATES of vols. II-IX, with Sterne's signature in ink, as usual, inscribed at the head of first chapters in vols. V, VII and IX, second edition of vol. I, which was published on 3 April 1760. Vol. VII is in the first state with the errata on the verso of the title-page and vol. IX with variant a of "posteriori" between pages v and vi. Rothchild 1970.
