[HALE, Edward Everett (1822-1909)]. The Man Without a Country. Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1865.

12o. Later red half morocco. Provenance: Virginia Loyall Farragut, wife of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut (letter from Hale tipped in); Loyall Farragut, their only son (signature on flyleaf).

FIRST EDITION, with a letter from Hale to Mrs. Farragut bound in, 7 July 1865: "May I ask you acceptance of a little magazine story of the sea, which I wrote some time since... It will not do to show it to the admiral , because a landsman's sea-talk would disgust him." "Though Farragut's devotion to his invalid wife was legendary, in December 1843 the widower married Virginia Loyall, mother of his only child. Farragut was a focused individual; his only passions were profession, family, and education" (DAB). Peter Parley to Penrod, p. 24; Sabin 39627. A SUPERB ASSOCIATION COPY.
