HAASIS & LUBRECHT, publishers. The American Union Railroad Map of the United States, British Possessions, West Indies, Mexico, and Central America. New York: Smith & McDougal for Haasis & Lubrecht, 1873.
Folded wall map, 16 dissected sheets mounted on linen, 992 x 1,438 mm overall. Folding into original publisher's cloth-backed board portfolio, with title label in German from the publisher Wilhelm Lubrecht in Stuttgart.
A VIBRANTLY COLORED EXAMPLE IN VERY FINE CONDITION. A reworking of the Lubrecht and Rosa map "The American Continent" of 1864 which first appeared in 1871. At top is a colored vignette of the railroad, with San Francisco at the West and Manhattan at the East. An elaborate title and view of a steam engine and train station have replaced the more subdued 1864 title. Population tables of the United States are added to the left and right sides of the map. The 1871 map updated the 1864 map to show political and some topographical changes of the ensuing seven years. Projected railroad lines are shown running everywhere in the west. The coloring is very bright, to match the decidedly optimistic (expansionist) flavor of the map. The 1873 edition adds text next to the population figures, more railroads, but records no changes in topography. It was issued in a cover with a label in German of Wilhelm Lubrecht in Stuttgart, Germany, indicating it may have been sold to emigrants. SCARCE: no copies of the 1873 Haasis & Lubrecht map are recorded in American Book Prices Current in at least 30 years.
