LIMITED EDITION, Number 133 of 250 copies specially bound for presentation purposes. PRESENTATION COPY, BOLDLY INSCRIBED by the president to "Hon Claude G. Bowers. From: The President, White House, August 13, 1952" on the limitation page; ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED beneath the facing frontispiece portrait: "To an able ambassador and a great historian, Hary Truman." Bowers, a journalist and author of the bestselling Jefferson and Hamilton, was a staunch Democrat and was appointed by Roosevelt as ambassador to Spain and later Chile.

RARE. Only four copies of the deluxe edition of this collection of Truman presidential papers have been offered at auction in recent years, including one inscribed for Attorney General Howard McGrath (sale, Christie's 19 May 2000, lot 135, $7,500) and the copy inscribed to Eleanor Roosevelt (sale, Christie's, 15 February 2001, lot 51, $28,000).
