A GRACIOUS NOTE TO THE "OTHER" LORETTA YOUNG IN THE PIVOTAL 1948 ELECTION YEAR: "Thanks a lot," Truman tells the White House staffer and Hollywood starlet's namesake, "for the nice birthday present. I'm sure that those cards will bring me luck. It was thoughtful of you and Rose to remember the day." Young was an assistant to Rose Conway, Truman's office secretary. Young's husband, E. Merl Young became implicated in one of the many influence-peddling scandals that plagued the final years of the Truman administration. Critics charged that Mr. Young, a former Reconstruction Finance Corporation lawyer turned lobbyist, was using his wife's White House pass to wheedle officials and steer R. F. C. loans to undeserving Missouri cronies. Mrs. Young got fired to make sure her husband got lost. Ironically, that other Loretta Young's career was about to stall as well, as she hit the "mandatory" retirement age for Hollywood starlets - forty - in 1953. After appearing in nearly 100 films up to that time, Young enjoyed only brief television work for the remaining 47 years of her life.
