8o. Engraved frontispiece (frontispiece reinforced at margin). Later half calf, marbled boards, spine gilt-lettered (some minor rubbing at joints and corners). Provenance: indistinct signature on title-page.

Later edition of Cooke's description of the first air balloon and its first flight in Paris. Constructed by the Montgolfier brothers at their paper-making company in Annonay, France, the balloon was constructed of paper, weighed 1,600 lbs. and was heated by a brazier. It was constantly stoked with wet straw and sheep's wool to produce smoke, because, at that time, the Montgolfier brothers believed it to be smoke and not hot air that caused the paper envelope to rise. The first flight lasted 25 minutes and traveled a total of 9,000 yards.
