BURTON, Richard Francis. Vikram and The Vampire or Tales of Hindu Devilry. London: Longmans, Green, and Co. 1870.

8o (188 x 126 mm). Wood-engravings by Ernest Griset. Original black cloth with bevelled edges, covers and spine lettered in gilt within ornamental frame of vampires in red, (light fraying of spine ends and splitting to joints).

FIRST EDITION, THE RARE FIRST ISSUE of Burton's adaptation of these famous Hindu tales originally written in Sanskrit in the 11th century. As with his "Arabian Nights" which followed in 1885, Burton did not simply translate these tales but "clothed the skeleton with flesh and blood." He described them as the "rude beginning of that fictitious history which ripened to the "Arabian Nights" Entertainments." Penzer p. 81-82; Casada 93; Spink 40.
