KEATS, John (1795-1821). Endymion: A Poetic Romance. London: Taylor & Hessey, 1818.
8o (212 x 132 mm). Half-title (imprint on verso), dedication to Thomas Chatterton (verso blank), five-line errata leaf. (Without advertisements.) Burgundy morocco gilt extra, sides with elaborate gilt and onlayed pattern of flowers and leaves, spine righly gilt, brown morocco doublures and linings, edges gilt, by Zaehnsdorf; slipcase. Provenance: Francis Kettaneh (morocco bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. Wise (1923) asserted that copies with the single-line errata constituted a first issue, but copies in boards with both forms are noted, and as Hayward points out, from reference to the poet's correspondence, both single-line and five-line forms were printed prior to publication. The poem, written at age 21, includes the famous line "a thing of beauty is a joy forever," which became, a half century later, a touchstone of the aesthetic movement. Ashley III, 13; Hayward 232; MacGillivray 2. See also lots 406, 412, 513 and 524-539 for other lots from the James Bieri collection. (13)
