PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE ECONOMIST THOMAS ROBERT MALTHUS on presentation bookplate in vol. 1: "May 1830 Gilbert Malcolm History. T. Robert Malthus, Profr." Malcolm was awarded this set as acknowledgement as first of his class at East India College in History. In 1805 Malthus was appointed Professor of Modern History and Political Economy at the East India College in Haileybury, thereby becoming England's first academic economist. Burnet's work is one of the most famous memoirs of tumultuous 17th-century England. "The value of the History of his Own Time as a candid narrative and an invaluable work of reference has continually risen as investigations into original materials have proceeded" (DNB). (6)
