RUSSELL, William Howard, Sir (1820-1907). The Atlantic Telegraph. London: Day & Son, [c. 1866].

4o. Color tinted lithographed title, 24 plates, and one chart by Robert Dudley (some occasional, mostly marginal foxing, a few text leaves with repaired tears at top margins). Contemporary two-toned cloth, elaborately gilt-stamped on front cover and spine (skillfully rebacked preserving original spine).

FIRST EDITION. A lavishly illustrated Victorian "gift book" commemorating the successful laying of Cyrus Fields' Atlantic cable in 1866. It contains what may be the earliest history of the Atlantic cable project and was written by William Howard Russell, a famous war correspondent with the London Times, who was the only journalist allowed to travel with Field's expedition. The illustrations are by the London artist Robert Dudley, who accompanied Russell on the voyage.
