[SALICETO, Guilielmus de (1210-77). Cyrurgia, books I and II]. Manuscript on paper, in Italian. 29 lines, 39 leaves. (Waterstained and faded, lower outer corners cut away with some loss of text.) Later grey boards. Italy, circa 1480. 200 x 140 mm. Provenance: with H.P. Kraus.

The work begins "Guilelmus. Questo libro e... Guilelmo e tracta de tute tute [sic] le infirmitado... e de tuti le feride... e de tute le osse... e de notomia del corpo de li homo..." The codex includes Books I and II (of IV) of Saliceto's "Surgery," probably somewhat abridged. Book I (66 chapters) deals with various growths such as fistulas, polyps, cancers, etc. II (26 chapters) deals with injuries and contusions in various parts of the body. Leaf 36 is headed "Medicine consolidative e sigilativi" and from there to the end various recipes are given.

Saliceto practiced and taught medicine at Bologna and Verona. There were numerous mediaeval translations of his Cyrurgia into vernacular languages. According to de Ricci's census, there is only one Saliceto codex in American libraries (New York Academy of Medicine).
